A Meiji-era triptych woodblock print by Migita Toshihide depicting the surrender of Qing dynasty soldiers during the First Sino-Japanese War.
This woodblock print by Migita Toshihide depicts a scene from the First Sino-Japanese War, specifically the Battle of Ansong Ford in 1894. Toshihide, a student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, produced this work during a period when Japanese printmakers documented military campaigns for a domestic audience. The composition is a triptych, a common format for war prints of this era, allowing for a wide narrative scope.
The scene shows Japanese officers in Western-style military uniforms, seated and standing near a tent, receiving the surrender of Qing dynasty soldiers. The contrast between the rigid, upright posture of the Japanese commanders and the kneeling, submissive figures of the Chinese soldiers reflects the political and nationalistic messaging of the time. The artist employs clear, defined lines to delineate the uniforms, facial features, and the surrounding camp environment. The colour palette remains relatively muted, relying on earth tones and the stark white of the tents to focus attention on the central figures.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of Meiji-era woodblock production. The registration of the blocks is accurate, ensuring that the complex details of the military regalia remain sharp. The background features a suggestion of the Korean terrain, though the focus is firmly on the human interaction. This work serves as a record of how the Japanese public consumed news of overseas military engagements through visual media. It captures the intersection of traditional printmaking techniques and the modernising influence of the Meiji period, where Western military aesthetics were adopted and integrated into Japanese visual culture.
