A refined 1870 oil painting by Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, depicting a contemplative young woman inspired by Lamartine's literary character, Graziella.
Jules-Joseph Lefebvre painted Graziella in 1870, a work that captures the technical precision associated with the French Academic tradition. The subject is inspired by the character from Alphonse de Lamartine's autobiographical novel of the same name, which recounts a young man's romantic encounter with a girl on the island of Procida. Lefebvre depicts the figure perched upon a rocky outcrop, her gaze directed away from the viewer towards the horizon.
The composition relies on a balanced arrangement of form and light. The figure wears a traditional Italianate dress, rendered with soft folds and muted blue tones that contrast against the warm, hazy atmosphere of the background. A fishing net rests across her lap, providing a tactile element that anchors the figure to the foreground. Lefebvre employs a smooth application of paint, characteristic of his training at the École des Beaux-Arts, which minimises visible brushwork to create a polished surface.
The lighting is diffuse, suggesting the quiet transition of twilight. This choice of illumination softens the contours of the figure, allowing her to blend into the atmospheric setting. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine literary narrative with a controlled, classical approach to portraiture. By focusing on the contemplative mood of the subject, Lefebvre invites the viewer to consider the quiet solitude of the scene. The painting remains a representative example of the nineteenth-century interest in romanticised, literary subjects rendered with high technical fidelity.
