A detailed botanical illustration of a pomegranate by Maria Sibylla Merian, featuring blossoms, leaves, butterflies, and a caterpillar. This hand-coloured engraving showcases Merian's skill in combining scientific observation with artistic representation.
This botanical study of a pomegranate comes from the hand of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), a German-Swiss naturalist and scientific illustrator. Merian is noted for her detailed and accurate depictions of insects and plants, particularly those she observed during her research expeditions to Suriname. Her work contributed significantly to the field of entomology and botany during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. She was among the first to document the life cycles of insects, challenging prevailing scientific theories of the time. In this image, a pomegranate is depicted in detail, split open to reveal its seeds. The plant is adorned with blossoms, leaves, and two butterflies. A caterpillar crawls along one of the branches. The composition is carefully arranged to showcase the various stages of the plant's life cycle, as well as its interaction with insects. The colours are delicately applied, enhancing the naturalistic quality of the illustration. Merian's work combines scientific observation with artistic skill, resulting in images that are both informative and aesthetically pleasing.
