A 1983 collage by Dutch artist Carel Visser, combining photographic imagery with geometric cardboard elements to form a minimalist representation of a gorilla.
Carel Visser, a prominent figure in Dutch post-war sculpture, created this work in 1983. Known for his rigorous approach to form and material, Visser often utilised industrial or discarded objects to explore spatial relationships. This piece, titled Gorilla, demonstrates his interest in the intersection of organic imagery and geometric abstraction. The composition relies on the juxtaposition of a photographic element, depicting the head of a gorilla, against a structured arrangement of cardboard fragments.
The work functions through the tension between the literal representation of the animal and the abstract, block-like construction of its body. Visser employs a muted palette, allowing the textures of the cardboard to dictate the visual rhythm of the piece. The inclusion of printed text on the cardboard, such as the 'Letts' branding, introduces a sense of the everyday into the artistic process. This choice reflects Visser's broader practice of elevating humble materials through precise, deliberate placement.
By deconstructing the figure into a series of overlapping planes, Visser invites the viewer to consider the gorilla not as a singular biological entity, but as a collection of shapes and volumes. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the balance of negative space and the physical weight of the collage elements. This approach is characteristic of his later period, where he moved away from traditional bronze casting to embrace more ephemeral, found materials. The result is a study in form that maintains a direct, unadorned presence. It provides a clear example of how Visser manipulated simple components to suggest complex, living subjects without resorting to conventional representational techniques.
