A tender, post-impressionist study of two children preparing for bed, rendered with the expressive, melancholic style characteristic of Nicolae Tonitza.
Nicolae Tonitza, a central figure in Romanian modernism, frequently turned his attention to the domestic sphere. In this work, he captures two children preparing for sleep. The composition is defined by a flattened perspective, where the decorative background pattern merges with the foreground figures. Tonitza employs a specific approach to portraiture, often characterised by large, expressive eyes and a sense of quiet melancholy. The children are dressed in simple white garments, which contrast with the busy, colourful textile patterns surrounding them.
The presence of a toy in the lower right corner provides a narrative element, grounding the scene in the reality of childhood. Tonitza uses a palette that balances soft skin tones with bolder blues, reds, and yellows in the background fabrics. His brushwork is deliberate, avoiding excessive detail in favour of capturing the mood and the psychological state of his subjects. This piece reflects his interest in the decorative qualities of painting, influenced by his exposure to European modern art movements during his time in Paris and Munich.
Tonitza is well-regarded for his ability to imbue his subjects with a sense of vulnerability. By focusing on the intimate moments of family life, he moves away from the grand historical narratives common in earlier academic painting. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the balance between decorative surface and human emotion is maintained through careful colour placement and simplified forms. The print captures the texture of the original oil application, preserving the tonal shifts that define the children's faces and the surrounding environment.
