Description
A group in historical dress prepares for a hawking expedition outside a grand manor house. This watercolour by David Cox demonstrates his loose brushwork and interest in English heritage.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a significant contributor to the English watercolour movement. He began his career as a theatrical scene painter before turning to landscape and genre subjects. This work belongs to a series of historical scenes set at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire. Cox visited the hall frequently during the 1830s and 1840s, attracted by its preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture.
The composition depicts a hunting party assembling on the stone terrace of the manor. Figures wear seventeenth-century attire, including doublets and wide-brimmed hats. Several individuals hold hawks on their gloved hands, while others manage a pack of hounds. The massive stone walls and Gothic windows of the manor provide a solid vertical anchor on the left side of the frame. To the right, the view opens to a wide valley under a pale blue sky.
Cox used a broad, wet-on-wet technique to render the atmosphere of the English countryside. The clouds are suggested with rapid washes, creating a sense of movement. His handling of the stone textures involves dry brushwork over softer under-washes. This approach avoids precise detail in favour of capturing the overall mood. The figures are integrated into the environment through shared tones of ochre and terracotta.
Hawking was a traditional sport of the nobility, and its inclusion here reflects a nineteenth-century interest in the Tudor and Stuart periods. Cox often populated his architectural studies with these costumed figures to suggest the history of the sites he painted. The contrast between the heavy masonry and the airy sky is a characteristic feature of his mature style. This watercolour demonstrates his ability to balance architectural weight with atmospheric light.
