A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Theodoor Galle depicting the Roman legend of the Vestal Virgin Tuccia proving her innocence.
This engraving by Theodoor Galle depicts the Roman legend of the Vestal Virgin Tuccia, who was falsely accused of unchastity. To prove her innocence, she successfully carried water from the River Tiber to the Temple of Vesta in a sieve. The composition features the river god Tiber, depicted as a bearded figure pouring water from an urn, while Tuccia stands before him holding the sieve. The scene is populated with classical motifs, including a she-wolf, putti, and architectural elements that evoke the Roman setting.
Theodoor Galle, a member of the prominent Antwerp-based Galle family of engravers, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The work employs fine hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume within the figures and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a narrative frame for the image, typical of the didactic nature of Northern Mannerist prints.
The architectural background, featuring a circular temple and colonnades, reflects the interest in classical antiquity that permeated European art during the early seventeenth century. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical detail, while the arrangement of the scene balances the mythological presence of the river god with the human narrative of the Vestal Virgin. This print serves as a record of the period's fascination with classical mythology and the technical capabilities of the copperplate engraving medium. The composition is structured to guide the viewer from the central interaction between Tuccia and the river god toward the background elements, creating a sense of spatial depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the print.
