Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. This work, painted in 1914, demonstrates his methodical approach to the deconstruction of everyday objects. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, Gris here employs a more structured, architectural method of composition. He flattens the pictorial space, arranging the glass, cup, and newspaper into a series of overlapping geometric planes.

The palette is deliberate, utilising cool blues and greens to contrast with the warmer, wood-grained textures of the background. Gris often incorporated elements of collage, even when working solely in oil paint, as seen in the simulated wood grain and the bold, stencilled lettering of the newspaper. The text 'LE J' is a clear reference to the French newspaper 'Le Journal', a common motif in the works of Cubist painters of the period. By isolating these domestic items, Gris invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the objects and the surface of the canvas itself.

His approach is marked by a rigorous intellectual clarity. He does not seek to capture the fleeting appearance of the objects, but rather to construct a new reality through the arrangement of form and colour. The composition is balanced, with the vertical axis of the glass and the horizontal orientation of the newspaper creating a stable, yet dynamic, arrangement. This work is representative of the artist's mature style, where the interplay of light and shadow is replaced by a focus on the inherent properties of the objects depicted. The result is a precise, calculated image that remains one of the most recognisable examples of his contribution to the early twentieth-century avant-garde.
