A detailed sixteenth-century Dutch engraving depicting the act of giving drink to the thirsty, a classic representation of the Seven Works of Mercy.
This engraving, titled Dorstigen laven, depicts the act of giving drink to the thirsty, one of the Seven Works of Mercy. Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, a Dutch humanist, engraver, and writer, produced this work during the sixteenth century. The composition features a man offering a drink from a vessel to a thirsty individual, who leans forward to receive the water. The scene is set within a stone architectural structure, with barrels visible in the background, suggesting a cellar or storage area. A small child is also shown drinking from a separate container in the lower left corner.
The engraving demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Northern Renaissance printmaking. Coornhert employs cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the stone walls, and the reflective surfaces of the ceramic vessels. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical detail, reflecting the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European artists of the period. The inscription at the bottom, written in Middle Dutch, provides a direct reference to the biblical passage from Matthew 25:35, which serves as the thematic basis for the Seven Works of Mercy.
Coornhert was a significant figure in the intellectual life of the Netherlands, and his artistic output often mirrored his philosophical and theological interests. This print is part of a series dedicated to the corporal works of mercy, a common subject in Christian iconography intended to encourage charitable behaviour. The work is notable for its clarity of narrative and its balanced arrangement of figures within the architectural space. It remains a clear example of the didactic function of religious art in the sixteenth century, where visual storytelling was used to communicate moral lessons to a broad audience.
