Description
A monumental fresco study by Carlo Carrà, reflecting the artist's return to classical order and structural simplicity during the 1930s.
This work, titled Giudizio Universale, represents the shift in Carlo Carrà’s practice during the 1930s. Moving away from his earlier involvement with Futurism and Metaphysical art, Carrà embraced the Novecento Italiano movement. This aesthetic sought a return to order, drawing inspiration from the structural clarity of early Italian Renaissance masters such as Giotto and Masaccio.
The composition features a central standing figure, draped in a simple cloth, gesturing towards the heavens. Surrounding this figure are various human forms in states of repose or emergence from the earth. The treatment of the human anatomy is simplified and monumental, prioritising volume and weight over anatomical precision. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earthy ochres, muted pinks, and soft blues, which align with the traditional fresco technique.
Carrà’s approach here rejects the dynamism of his youth. Instead, he focuses on a static, timeless quality. The figures appear grounded within a sparse, simplified environment, suggesting a sense of permanence. The curved upper edge of the work indicates its original placement within an architectural setting, likely a lunette or an arched wall space. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs attention to the sculptural presence of the figures and the solemnity of the subject matter. This piece reflects the broader European interest in classicism during the interwar period, where artists looked to historical precedents to establish a sense of stability and continuity in their work. The result is a composition that feels both ancient and modern, balancing a clear narrative structure with a deliberate, measured execution.
