Description

A precise, early portrait by Lucian Freud, capturing a moment of quiet introspection with fine detail and a stark, dark background.

Girl Reading, painted in 1947, belongs to the early period of Lucian Freud's career. During these years, his technique was characterised by a meticulous, linear precision that differed from the heavy, impasto application of his later work. The painting displays a sharp focus on the subject, with fine brushwork used to define the texture of the hair and the subtle contours of the face. The subject is captured in a moment of quiet concentration, her head resting on her hand as she looks downward.

Freud employs a restricted palette, allowing the golden tones of the hair and skin to contrast against the dark, near-black background. This choice of lighting creates a sense of isolation, drawing the viewer's attention entirely to the subject's expression. The composition is cropped closely, a technique Freud used to remove extraneous detail and focus on the psychological presence of the sitter. The white collar of the garment provides a clean, geometric break from the organic curves of the face and hair.

This work reflects the influence of Northern European painting, which Freud studied closely during his formative years. The attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of the eyelashes and the individual strands of hair, demonstrates his technical discipline. Unlike his later, more gestural portraits, this piece maintains a smooth surface finish. It remains a clear example of his early interest in the human figure as a subject for rigorous observation. The painting does not rely on narrative elements, instead presenting a singular, static moment of introspection. By stripping away the environment, Freud forces an encounter between the viewer and the subject, a quality that would remain a constant in his practice throughout his life.

Artist Biography

Lucian Freud

Freud painted skin. Not the idea of skin, not an impression of skin, but the actual weight and texture and colour of a specific person's flesh at a specific moment. His portraits take months. The sitters come to his studio day after day, holding the same position, while he builds the paint surface in layers so thick that the canvas develops its own topography.

He was Sigmund Freud's grandson. The family left Berlin for London in 1933, when Lucian was ten. He became a British citizen in 1939. The biographical connection to psychoanalysis is unavoidable and he resisted it throughout his career, though his paintings of naked bodies on beds and sofas, viewed from above in harsh overhead light, invite exactly the clinical reading he rejected.

His early work is tight, linear, almost Pre-Raphaelite in its precision: the portrait of Francis Bacon from 1952, Girl with a White Dog, Hotel Bedroom. The shift came in the late 1950s when he switched from sable brushes to hog-hair, thickened the paint, and began working on a larger scale. The flesh became heavier, more present, more uncomfortable to look at.

He painted everyone the same way. The Queen sat for him (the result was controversial). His studio assistant and bookmaker 'Big Sue' Tilley posed naked on a sofa; the painting sold for GBP33.6 million. His whippets appear repeatedly. He insisted on working from life, never photographs, and never took commissions. People came to him.

He worked every day until a few weeks before his death in 2011, at eighty-eight. His last painting was unfinished on the easel.
