A nineteenth-century etching by Anton Heinrich Riedel, reproducing a classic Dutch genre scene of a woman reading by a window.
This fine art print is an etching by the German artist Anton Heinrich Riedel, created as a reproduction of the Dutch Golden Age painting by Pieter de Hooch. Riedel was active during the nineteenth century, a period when printmakers frequently translated celebrated oil paintings into monochrome etchings to make European masterworks accessible to a wider audience.
The composition depicts a young woman standing in a quiet interior, her attention fixed upon a letter or book held in her hands. She is positioned near an open window, which serves as the primary source of light, casting soft illumination across her features and the surrounding space. To the left, heavy drapery hangs in deep folds, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the window frame and the table surface. On the table, a bowl of fruit sits amidst a draped cloth, adding a sense of domestic stillness to the scene.
Riedel employs a range of tonal values to replicate the atmospheric quality of the original painting. The etching technique allows for a delicate rendering of textures, from the smooth surface of the fruit to the heavy fabric of the curtains. The window, with its leaded glass panes, creates a geometric pattern that frames the figure, while the reflection in the glass adds a layer of visual complexity. This print captures the characteristic quietude of Dutch genre scenes, focusing on a private moment of contemplation within a domestic setting. The work demonstrates the technical precision required by nineteenth-century printmakers to convey the depth and light of earlier oil compositions through the medium of ink on paper.
