A 19th-century lithograph by Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl, reproducing a candlelit genre scene by Godfried Schalcken.
This lithograph by Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl reproduces a painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Godfried Schalcken. Hanfstaengl, a German lithographer and photographer, produced this work in 1840 as part of his efforts to document the collections of the Königliche Gemälde-Galerie in Dresden. The print captures the technical precision of the original oil painting, which is known for its mastery of chiaroscuro.
The composition focuses on a young woman illuminated by the flame of a small oil lamp. She holds an egg against the light to check its quality, a process known as candling. The contrast between the bright light source and the surrounding darkness creates a dramatic effect, typical of Schalcken's style. The woman's expression is one of quiet concentration, while the basket of eggs and the simple table setting provide a domestic context. Hanfstaengl uses the lithographic medium to translate the subtle gradations of light and shadow from the original painting into a monochrome format. The fine lines and tonal variations allow for a clear depiction of the textures in the woman's clothing and the soft glow cast upon her face.
This print serves as a record of the 17th-century Dutch tradition of candlelit scenes, which were popular for their ability to convey mood and narrative through artificial light. By reproducing such works, Hanfstaengl helped to disseminate knowledge of European masterworks to a wider audience during the 19th century. The inclusion of the original title in German, 'Ein Maedchen beym Lampenschein Eier untersuchend', at the base of the print, identifies the subject and the original artist, maintaining the historical context of the piece.
