A detailed salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus documenting a plaster relief of putti harvesting grapes, created for the Palais du Louvre.
This salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus captures a plaster model for a sculptural relief titled Les Vendanges, created by the sculptor Georges Clère. The work was intended for the decoration of the Palais du Louvre in Paris, a project that occupied many artists during the mid-nineteenth century. Baldus, a photographer of German-French origin, gained recognition for his technical precision and his ability to document architectural details with clarity.
The composition presents a semicircular relief featuring a group of putti engaged in the harvest of grapes. The figures are arranged in a rhythmic, balanced manner, typical of the neoclassical influences present in French public sculpture of the period. The soft, sepia tones of the salted paper process provide a gentle rendering of the plaster surface, allowing the viewer to observe the modelling of the forms and the texture of the fruit and foliage.
Baldus was commissioned by the French government to document the construction and renovation of the Louvre. His photographs were often compiled into albums, serving as a record of the artistic contributions to the palace. This particular image focuses on the sculptural elements, isolating the relief against a plain background to emphasise its form. The clarity of the print reflects the high standards of nineteenth-century architectural documentation. By capturing these preparatory models, Baldus preserved the creative process of the sculptors involved in the Louvre's expansion. The work remains a document of the intersection between photography and the decorative arts in Second Empire France.
