A detailed salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus documenting a plaster pediment model by Edmond Levêque for the Palais du Louvre.
This salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus captures a plaster model for a pediment sculpture titled La Guerre, created by the sculptor Edmond Levêque. The work was produced during the extensive mid-nineteenth-century renovations of the Palais du Louvre in Paris. Baldus, a photographer commissioned by the French government, documented the architectural and sculptural progress of the project with technical precision.
The composition presents the triangular pediment in isolation against a stark, neutral background. This presentation allows for a clear examination of the sculptural forms, which feature putti or allegorical figures engaged in martial motifs. The lighting is controlled to define the contours of the plaster, revealing the texture and depth of the relief work. As a record of the decorative programme for the Louvre, the image functions as both a historical document and a study of neoclassical ornamentation.
Baldus utilised the salted paper process to achieve a soft, tonal range that suits the matte surface of the plaster models. The clarity of the print demonstrates his mastery of early photographic techniques, particularly in his ability to render three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane. The work reflects the systematic approach taken by the state to archive the artistic contributions to the Louvre, ensuring that the details of the sculptural programme were preserved for posterity. The print remains a valuable reference for the study of Second Empire architectural decoration and the role of photography in documenting public works during this period.
