A detailed salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus documenting plaster sculptural models by Georges Diébolt for the Palais du Louvre.
This salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus captures plaster models for sculptural reliefs intended for the Palais du Louvre. During the mid-nineteenth century, the French government commissioned extensive documentation of the Louvre's expansion and renovation. Baldus, a photographer of significant technical skill, was tasked with recording these architectural details and the associated decorative elements.
The image displays two distinct reliefs, each featuring a putto surrounded by various symbolic attributes. These figures, sculpted by Georges Diébolt, represent the classical tradition of allegorical ornamentation common in Second Empire architecture. The lighting in the photograph is controlled to emphasise the three-dimensional form of the plaster, allowing the viewer to observe the texture and depth of the carving. The numbering visible at the base of each relief suggests these were part of a larger catalogue or inventory of the sculptural programme.
Baldus utilised the salted paper process, which produces a soft, matte finish characteristic of early photographic documentation. This medium provides a subtle tonal range, capturing the off-white surface of the plaster against a neutral background. The composition is straightforward and objective, reflecting the documentary purpose of the commission. By isolating these sculptural elements, Baldus provides a clear view of the craftsmanship involved in the Louvre's decorative scheme, free from the distractions of the surrounding building site. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of nineteenth-century state-sponsored photography and the preservation of architectural history.
