The shrine was a popular destination for pilgrims and travellers during the Edo period. The composition is dominated by a large stone torii gate and several stone lanterns. These structures are heavily laden with snow, rendered through the use of unprinted paper. Three women walk through the centre of the scene. They carry traditional oil-paper umbrellas to protect their kimonos from the elements. The artist used a palette of indigo blue and grey to convey the cold temperature of a winter evening. Small touches of pale orange on the clothing provide a subtle contrast to the cool tones of the environment. Hiroshige employed specific woodblock techniques to suggest depth and texture. The falling snow consists of small white circles scattered across the dark sky. This effect was achieved by leaving areas of the woodblock uncarved or by applying white pigment.
