A six-panel ink wash screen by the Zen monk Sesson Shūkei, depicting gibbons in a natural setting with expressive, calligraphic brushwork.
Sesson Shūkei, a Zen monk and painter of the Muromachi period, created this six-panel folding screen using the traditional ink wash technique known as sumi-e. The work depicts a group of gibbons moving through a sparse, atmospheric environment. Sesson is known for his individualistic approach to the ink tradition, often favouring jagged, expressive brushwork over the more conventional styles of his contemporaries.
The composition is balanced across the six panels, using negative space to suggest mist and distance. The gibbons are rendered with quick, calligraphic strokes that capture their agility and physical presence. Their forms are integrated into the branches and rocky outcrops, creating a sense of movement that spans the width of the screen. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to faint, watery greys, providing a sense of depth without relying on rigid perspective.
This piece reflects the influence of Chinese Chan painting, which was a primary source of inspiration for Japanese ink painters of the era. The subject of gibbons, often associated with Buddhist themes of longing or the human condition, is treated here with a focus on natural observation. The screen demonstrates the artist's ability to manipulate ink to convey texture, from the rough bark of the trees to the soft fur of the animals. As a work of the sixteenth century, it represents the transition toward the more decorative and bold styles that would define the subsequent Momoyama period. The preservation of the original paper surface allows the subtle gradations of the ink to remain visible, offering a clear view of the artist's technical process and his mastery of the brush.
