An eighteenth-century etching by Hendrik de Leth depicting the formal gardens and fountain at Huis ter Meer in Maarssen.
This etching by Hendrik de Leth captures the formal garden design of Huis ter Meer in Maarssen, a Dutch estate along the Vecht river. Produced in the early eighteenth century, the work documents the rigid symmetry and geometric precision characteristic of the period's garden architecture. The composition is viewed from an elevated terrace, looking down upon a large circular basin with a central fountain.
The foreground features figures in contemporary dress, providing a sense of scale and social context to the manicured grounds. Beyond the primary water feature, the garden extends into a series of parterres and tree-lined walkways, leading the eye toward the distant structure known as the cabinet. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the architectural elements and the clipped hedges, reflecting the orderly nature of the Dutch garden style.
De Leth was a cartographer and engraver, and his technical background is evident in the precise rendering of the spatial relationships within the garden. The print serves as a visual record of the aristocratic lifestyle and the aesthetic values of the Dutch Golden Age, where control over nature was a primary expression of wealth and status. The sky is filled with light, cloud-dappled patterns, typical of the period's topographical engravings. This print offers a glimpse into the vanished world of the Vecht estates, where the integration of water, stone, and vegetation created a highly structured environment for leisure and display. The work remains a valuable resource for historians studying the development of European garden design and the documentation of historic Dutch estates.
