A detailed seventeenth-century topographical drawing of the city of Zwolle, featuring the Sassenpoort and surrounding riverbanks in pen and watercolour.
This topographical study by Gerrit Grasdorp depicts the city of Zwolle as it appeared during the late seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the city walls and the Sassenpoort, a prominent gatehouse that remains a recognisable feature of the urban silhouette. Grasdorp employs a delicate application of ink and watercolour to define the architectural forms and the surrounding rural environment.
The foreground features a waterway, which serves as a natural boundary between the viewer and the city. Small figures are positioned along the banks, including individuals engaged in fishing and a person navigating a small boat. These details provide a sense of scale and daily activity within the quiet, pastoral setting. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on soft greens, earthy browns, and muted greys to capture the atmosphere of the Dutch countryside.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision typical of seventeenth-century Dutch draughtsmanship. The lines are fine and controlled, allowing for the clear delineation of the buildings and the distant horizon. The composition is balanced, with the city occupying the centre and the river guiding the eye from the foreground into the mid-ground. The sky is left largely empty, a common convention in topographical works of this period, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the architectural and geographical details of the town. This print offers a clear record of the historical appearance of Zwolle, documenting the relationship between the fortified city and the water that supported its commerce and transport.
