A detailed topographical drawing by Jean Grandjean, depicting a panoramic view of Rome from the Capitoline Hill with figures in the foreground.
This drawing by Jean Grandjean captures a panoramic view of Rome as seen from the Capitoline Hill. Grandjean, a Dutch artist who travelled to Italy during the late eighteenth century, utilised pen and ink with a delicate wash to document the urban architecture of the city. The composition is structured around the steep, stepped incline leading down from the hill, which guides the viewer toward the distant skyline.
The foreground features figures in period dress, including monks and a traveller with a donkey, providing a sense of scale against the massive stone walls. The middle ground reveals the dense fabric of Rome, with various domes and rooftops visible under a clear sky. To the right, the Arch of Septimius Severus is partially visible, grounding the scene in its specific historical location within the Roman Forum area.
Grandjean’s technique relies on precise linework to define the architectural elements, while the wash application creates subtle gradations of light and shadow across the stone surfaces. The work reflects the interest of Northern European artists in the classical ruins and urban topography of Italy during the Grand Tour era. The drawing is executed on multiple sheets of paper joined together, suggesting a deliberate effort to capture the breadth of the vista. The muted palette and careful attention to perspective demonstrate the artist's training and his observational approach to the Italian environment. This piece offers a view of Rome that balances architectural accuracy with the daily life of the city's inhabitants at the end of the eighteenth century.
