A nineteenth-century albumen print by Adolphe Braun & Cie. depicting the Munttoren and the Singel canal in Amsterdam.
This albumen print captures the Munttoren, or Mint Tower, situated at the confluence of the Singel canal and the Amstel river in Amsterdam. Produced by the studio of Adolphe Braun, the image reflects the technical precision associated with the firm during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the tower, which rises above the surrounding canal-side buildings, with its reflection visible in the calm water of the Singel.
Braun & Cie. operated from Dornach and became known for their extensive documentation of European cities and alpine scenery. Their work often utilised the albumen process, which allowed for the reproduction of fine detail in architectural subjects. The print is presented within a decorative border, a common practice for photographs intended for inclusion in albums or as souvenirs for travellers during the Victorian era. The stillness of the water and the absence of significant human activity suggest an early morning exposure, a technique frequently employed by photographers of the period to avoid motion blur in long exposures.
The Munttoren itself dates back to the seventeenth century, originally serving as part of the city's medieval fortifications. By the time this photograph was taken, the structure had long functioned as a landmark, its distinctive spire providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the canal and the adjacent merchant houses. The image provides a record of the urban fabric of Amsterdam before the extensive modernisation projects of the late nineteenth century. The clarity of the masonry and the tonal range of the print demonstrate the high standards of the Braun studio, which maintained a reputation for quality throughout Europe. This print offers a view of the city that balances topographical accuracy with the aesthetic sensibilities of the era.
