An eighteenth-century hand-coloured etching by Johann Balthasar Probst depicting the historic harbour gates of Zierikzee in the Netherlands.
This hand-coloured etching by Johann Balthasar Probst depicts the harbour gates of Zierikzee, a historic town in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Probst, a prolific engraver based in Augsburg, produced numerous topographical views that documented European urban centres during the early eighteenth century. His work often served as a visual record for those interested in the geography and architecture of the Low Countries.
The composition focuses on the two primary harbour gates, the Zuidhavenpoort and the Noordhavenpoort, which served as defensive and commercial entry points for the town. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of the period, using precise hatching to define the masonry of the gates and the rigging of the vessels moored in the canal. The scene captures the daily activity of the port, with small figures in period dress gathered near the water and a rowing boat navigating the channel. The inclusion of a larger sailing vessel on the right provides a sense of scale and emphasises the maritime character of Zierikzee.
The colouring, applied by hand over the etched lines, uses a restrained palette of soft blues, ochres, and muted reds. This technique was common in the production of eighteenth-century prints, intended to make the images more appealing to collectors and travellers. The sky is rendered with a simple wash, allowing the architectural details of the gates to remain the primary focus. The print includes bilingual titling in the margins, a feature frequently found in Probst's output to facilitate wider distribution across European markets. This work offers a glimpse into the appearance of Dutch coastal infrastructure before the industrial changes of the nineteenth century, maintaining a balance between technical accuracy and decorative appeal.
