Description

A refined etching and aquatint by Théodore Roussel, featuring a serene Thames river scene framed by an integrated, decorative border.

Théodore Roussel, a French artist who spent the majority of his career in London, was a significant figure in the late nineteenth-century Etching Revival. This work, Gezicht op de Theems bij avond, demonstrates his technical mastery of colour printing from metal plates. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: a central, atmospheric depiction of the riverbank at dusk, and a surrounding decorative border. The central image captures the silhouette of trees against a fading sky, with soft reflections cast upon the water. Roussel employs a muted palette to convey the stillness of the evening. The surrounding frame, etched with a Greek key pattern and delicate, flowing foliate motifs, acts as a deliberate aesthetic device. This approach reflects the influence of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who was a close associate of Roussel and encouraged him to treat the entire sheet of paper as a unified design element. By incorporating the border directly into the plate, Roussel moves beyond the traditional presentation of a print, creating a self-contained object where the margins are as considered as the subject itself. This print is characteristic of Roussel's experimental approach to the medium. He often printed his own plates, carefully controlling the application of ink to achieve subtle tonal variations. The contrast between the rigid, geometric border and the organic, painterly quality of the river scene creates a tension that is typical of his work from this period. The piece remains a fine example of the period's interest in the decorative potential of printmaking, where the frame is not merely an accessory but an integral component of the artistic vision.
