A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Dutch artist Reinier Nooms, depicting a rural view of Conflans with figures and architectural elements.
Reinier Nooms, often known by his nickname Zeeman, was a Dutch maritime painter and etcher. This etching, titled Gezicht op Conflans, demonstrates his technical precision in capturing topographical subjects. The composition features a rural scene with a church positioned on a gentle rise in the distance. In the foreground, figures and animals occupy the path, providing a sense of scale to the surrounding trees and terrain.
Nooms utilised a system of fine, parallel lines to create tonal variation and texture. The sky is rendered with horizontal hatching, which contrasts with the more varied, short strokes used to define the foliage and the rocky ground. The artist signed the work in the lower left corner as R. Zeeman fecit, a common practice for his prints which were often produced for a market interested in travel and geography. The title, Veüe de Conflan, is inscribed in the lower margin, identifying the location as Conflans, a commune in France.
This print reflects the broader interest in topographical documentation during the seventeenth century. Nooms travelled extensively, and his etchings often served as visual records of the places he visited. His ability to balance the architectural elements with the natural environment is evident here. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on a clear, observational style that was popular among collectors of the period. The print is a fine example of the Dutch tradition of etching, where the economy of line is used to convey depth and atmosphere without the need for complex shading or colour. It remains a clear representation of the artist's skill in translating the nuances of a rural vista into a portable, printed format.
