Description
This mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant, 'Geweigerde brief' (The Rejected Letter), captures a moment of narrative tension between three figures in an interior setting. The artist's mastery of mezzotint creates a soft, velvety texture.
Wallerant Vaillant was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, known for his mastery of the mezzotint technique. Born in Lille, he later worked in Amsterdam, and his prints are characterised by their tonal range and delicate rendering of light and shadow. Vaillant's skill in mezzotint allowed him to create images with a soft, velvety texture, a departure from the sharper lines of engraving or etching. He produced numerous portraits and genre scenes. 'Geweigerde brief' (The Rejected Letter) depicts an interior scene with three figures. A woman stands centrally, holding a letter, while a man in elaborate attire extends his hand towards her. A third figure, possibly a servant, is seated at a table with various objects. The composition is carefully arranged, with the figures positioned to create a sense of narrative tension. The use of mezzotint enhances the scene's dramatic quality, with subtle gradations of tone that add depth and realism. A small dog sits on a stool, adding a touch of domesticity to the scene.

He trained under Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and worked as a portraitist in Amsterdam, with extended stays in Paris from 1659 to 1664.
