Carl Bloch painted this scene in 1873 as part of a major commission for the King's Oratory at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark. The series consists of twenty-three paintings depicting the life of Christ. This specific work illustrates the Agony in the Garden, a moment of intense prayer and sorrow before the arrest of Jesus. The original was executed in oil on copper, a choice that allowed for a smooth surface and fine detail. The composition focuses on the physical and emotional weight of the event. Christ is depicted in a deep red tunic, kneeling on rocky ground. His posture is slumped, suggesting exhaustion and grief. Beside him, an angel dressed in white provides comfort, resting a hand on his arm and leaning close. The contrast between the bright white of the angel and the dark, shadowed background creates a strong visual focus on the two figures. This use of light and shadow is a hallmark of Bloch's style, drawing the eye to the central narrative. Bloch used a gnarled tree trunk to frame the right side of the scene.
