A striking black and white woodcut by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring a geometric, stylised floral motif typical of early twentieth-century graphic design.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of the woodcut technique. This work, titled Gestileerd bloemmotief, demonstrates his ability to reduce organic forms into precise, geometric arrangements. The composition relies on the stark contrast between black ink and the negative space of the paper, a hallmark of his graphic approach.
The design features a central, fan-like element enclosed within a semi-circular arch, which is topped by a series of fine, radiating lines. Flanking this centre are symmetrical, curved forms filled with parallel stripes. These shapes suggest the structure of a flower or a seed pod, yet they remain abstracted from literal representation. The artist prioritises rhythm and balance over naturalistic detail, creating a visual harmony through repetition and clean lines.
De Mesquita often drew inspiration from the natural world, but his output frequently shifted towards decorative abstraction. This piece reflects the influence of the Art Nouveau movement, which sought to integrate artistic design into everyday objects and patterns. The clarity of the lines and the bold use of solid black areas indicate a high level of technical control, typical of his work in printmaking. His approach to the woodcut medium allowed for sharp edges and a graphic quality that remains effective in a modern context. This print serves as an example of early twentieth-century Dutch graphic design, where the focus rested on the structural potential of simple, repeated motifs.
