Description
A vibrant Expressionist woodcut by Franz Marc, 'Genesis II' depicts abstracted animal forms in bold colours and dynamic lines. This striking print brings a touch of early 20th-century artistic energy to any room.
Franz Marc's 'Genesis II (Schöpfungsgeschichte II)' is a striking example of early 20th-century Expressionist woodcut printmaking. Created in 1914, this work reflects Marc's deep engagement with themes of nature, spirituality, and the animal world, filtered through an increasingly abstract lens. The title, translating to 'Creation Story II', hints at Marc's exploration of primal forces and the interconnectedness of all living things. The print features a dynamic composition of abstracted animal forms, predominantly horses, rendered in bold black, green, and yellow. The stark contrasts and angular lines create a sense of energy and movement, characteristic of Expressionist aesthetics. Marc's use of colour is symbolic, with yellow often representing joy and vitality, green symbolising harmony, and black conveying a sense of mystery and the unknown. The woodcut medium itself lends a raw, tactile quality to the image, further enhancing its expressive power. As a fine art print for the home, 'Genesis II' offers a compelling blend of historical significance and visual impact. Its bold design and thought-provoking themes make it a captivating addition to any space, sparking conversation and inviting contemplation. The print's strong graphic quality also makes it a versatile piece that can complement a range of interior styles, from modern minimalist to eclectic bohemian.

Artist Biography
Franz Marc
In 1911, Marc co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) with Wassily Kandinsky, a pivotal group that championed abstract art and spiritual expression. This collective fostered an environment of experimentation and collaboration, pushing the boundaries of modern art. Key works such as "The Large Blue Horses" and "Fighting Forms" exemplify Marc's distinctive style, characterised by bold colours, simplified forms, and a deep sense of empathy for the animal kingdom. He believed that by portraying animals, he could reveal a deeper, more authentic reality.
Tragically, Franz Marc's artistic journey was cut short during World War I. He volunteered for military service and was killed in action at Verdun in 1916, at the age of 36. Despite his untimely death, Marc's legacy endures as a visionary artist who sought to capture the spiritual essence of nature and explore the depths of human emotion through his vibrant and expressive paintings.
