A striking 1914 woodcut by Franz Marc, featuring fluid, abstract forms and a bold, monochromatic palette with subtle green accents.
Genesis II is a woodcut by the German Expressionist artist Franz Marc. Created in 1914, this work reflects the artist's move toward abstraction during the final years of his career. Marc, a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, sought to express spiritual truths through the depiction of animals and natural forms. In this composition, the representational elements are reduced to rhythmic, interlocking shapes that suggest organic growth and primordial energy. The print employs a limited palette of black, cream, and muted green, which emphasises the stark contrast between the solid dark masses and the lighter, negative spaces. The woodcut technique allows for bold, graphic lines that define the swirling, fluid forms. These shapes appear to emerge from a chaotic state, echoing the theme of creation suggested by the title. The composition lacks a traditional perspective, instead favouring a flat, decorative arrangement that forces the viewer to engage with the interplay of line and shape. Marc's approach to this subject is characteristic of his desire to strip away the superficial appearance of the world to reveal an underlying order. The forms are not strictly identifiable as specific creatures or plants, but rather function as symbols of life force. The repetition of curved lines and circular motifs creates a sense of movement across the surface of the print. This work demonstrates the artist's technical skill in woodblock printing, where the physical resistance of the wood grain informs the final aesthetic. It remains a clear example of the shift within early twentieth-century German art toward a more subjective and non-representational visual language, where the artist's internal vision takes precedence over the objective observation of nature.
