A pair of historical photographs documenting a general roll call and a parade of New Zealand troops in the Netherlands, circa 1945.
This archival document consists of two distinct photographic records captured by Dick W.B. van Maarseveen during the final stages of the Second World War. The upper image depicts a 'Gen. Appel', or general roll call, where soldiers are arranged in a formation across an open parade ground. The lower image captures a formal parade of New Zealand troops, showing the disciplined ranks of soldiers in uniform. Both photographs are presented here as they appear in the original album, preserving the handwritten annotations that identify the subjects.
These images offer a direct view into the military life of Allied forces stationed in the Netherlands during the liberation period. The composition of the photographs is functional and observational, typical of mid-twentieth-century military documentation. The photographer focuses on the scale of the formations and the uniformity of the troops, providing a clear record of the logistics and presence of the New Zealand units. The stark, high-contrast nature of the gelatin silver process emphasises the textures of the uniforms and the flat, expansive nature of the parade grounds.
As historical artefacts, these prints provide a window into the immediate post-conflict environment. They document the presence of international forces on Dutch soil, capturing a moment of order and routine following the chaos of occupation. The inclusion of the original handwritten captions adds a layer of personal provenance, suggesting these were kept as mementos of the photographer's experiences. These prints are suitable for those interested in military history, twentieth-century photography, or the specific narrative of the liberation of the Netherlands.
