A detailed Baxter print depicting visitors observing a sculpture of Cupid and Psyche at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London.
This print by George Baxter captures a scene from the Great Exhibition of 1851, held at the Crystal Palace in London. The work depicts a pair of visitors observing a sculptural group of Cupid and Psyche. Baxter, a pioneer of colour printing, developed a complex process involving a steel plate for the key image and multiple wood blocks for the application of individual colours. This method allowed for a level of detail and tonal range that was previously difficult to achieve in mass-produced imagery.
The composition focuses on the contrast between the white marble sculpture and the deep red backdrop of the exhibition display. The visitors, dressed in mid-Victorian attire, provide a sense of scale and context to the setting. The print is presented on its original mount, which features the embossed seal of the Baxter process, confirming its authenticity as a product of his London workshop. The Great Exhibition was a moment of national pride, and Baxter produced a series of prints titled 'Gems of the Great Exhibition' to document the most popular displays for the public.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of Baxter's registration process. The subtle gradations in the clothing of the visitors and the soft modelling of the sculpture show the capabilities of his multi-block technique. This piece serves as a historical record of how Victorian audiences engaged with art and industry in a public space. The muted tones of the mount contrast with the saturated colours of the central image, drawing the eye directly to the sculptural subject. It is a fine example of the commercial print culture that flourished in Britain during the mid-nineteenth century, making high-quality visual reproductions accessible to a wider demographic.
