A precise engraving by Abraham Girardet documenting the Gemma Augustea, a famous Roman cameo depicting the apotheosis of Emperor Augustus.
This engraving by Abraham Girardet depicts the Gemma Augustea, a celebrated first-century Roman cameo carved from a double-layered sardonyx. Girardet, a Swiss engraver active in Paris, produced this work to document the complex iconography of the original artefact. The composition is divided into two registers, a common feature in Roman imperial art. The upper register features the Emperor Augustus, depicted in the guise of Jupiter, seated beside the goddess Roma. Surrounding them are various deities and personifications, including Tellus, the Earth, and Oceanus, representing the cosmic order and the reach of the Roman Empire. The lower register displays Roman soldiers erecting a trophy, with captive barbarians seated below, signifying the triumph of Rome over its enemies.
Girardet employs precise line work to translate the relief depth of the original stone into a two-dimensional medium. The engraving captures the musculature of the figures and the folds of their drapery with technical accuracy. By reproducing this object, Girardet contributed to the dissemination of classical imagery during the Neoclassical period, a time when European artists and scholars sought to emulate the aesthetic and moral values of the ancient world. The print serves as a record of the cameo, which is now housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The monochromatic palette of the engraving focuses the viewer on the narrative structure and the symbolic arrangement of the figures. It is a study in the translation of sculptural form into the graphic arts, maintaining the clarity and balance characteristic of the original Roman design. This print offers an opportunity to examine the details of the Gemma Augustea, which are often difficult to discern in the original stone due to its small scale and the subtle colour variations of the sardonyx.
