A striking woodcut portrait by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring a masked figure in a patterned cape, rendered in high-contrast black and natural paper tones.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of the woodcut medium. This work, titled Gemaskerde vrouw met cape, displays the stylistic characteristics of the turn of the century. The composition relies on the stark contrast between black ink and the natural tone of the paper, a technique that defines his graphic output. The figure wears a mask and a hooded cape, both decorated with flowing, organic patterns that echo the aesthetic of the Art Nouveau period.
De Mesquita often utilised bold, flat areas of black to create form, allowing the negative space of the paper to define the highlights and contours of the subject. The mask serves to obscure the identity of the sitter, shifting the focus toward the decorative quality of the garments and the rhythmic lines of the woodcut carving. The artist's signature monogram is visible in the upper right corner, a common feature in his prints.
This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in the graphic potential of the woodblock. By simplifying the visual information into high-contrast shapes, he achieves a balance between representation and pattern. The figure sits in a quiet, contemplative pose, with hands clasped, which contrasts with the busy, decorative surface of the cape. This print offers a clear example of the Dutch graphic tradition at the start of the twentieth century, where artists moved away from realistic shading toward a more stylised, linear approach. The work remains a representative example of de Mesquita's technical skill and his ability to manipulate the woodcut medium to produce clear, graphic imagery.
