This etching by Eugène Gaujean, dated 1879, translates the allegorical painting by Constance Marie Charpentier (often misattributed to Constance Mayer) into a monochrome medium. The composition depicts a small boat navigating a calm body of water. At the helm, a figure representing Happiness guides the vessel, while a winged Cupid assists with the oars. Within the boat, a young family rests in a state of repose, suggesting a journey through life protected by these benevolent forces.
Gaujean demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the etching needle. He employs varied line weights to differentiate between the soft textures of the figures' drapery and the more rugged, shadowed bank in the background. The play of light across the water is achieved through fine cross-hatching, which creates a sense of depth and atmospheric stillness. The figures are rendered with the classical proportions typical of late nineteenth-century French academic art, prioritising clarity of form and narrative legibility.
The work appeared in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, a publication that provided high-quality reproductions of fine art to a wider audience during the period.
