A watercolour and ink study by Vincent van Gogh, capturing the fortifications of Paris during his residence in the city in 1887.
This work depicts the fortifications of Paris during the artist's residence in the city between 1886 and 1888. Van Gogh moved to Paris to live with his brother Theo, and this period saw him experiment with various techniques, including the use of watercolour and ink. The composition captures a view of the city outskirts, where the urban architecture meets the defensive walls of the capital.
The artist employs a combination of ink outlines and washes of colour to define the scene. The perspective is relatively flat, with the ramparts creating a diagonal line that guides the eye across the paper. Figures are scattered along the path, rendered with minimal detail, suggesting the movement of daily life. The sky is treated with broad, fluid strokes of blue, contrasting with the more structured, geometric representation of the buildings in the background.
Van Gogh's approach here differs from his later, more impasto-heavy oil paintings. The use of ink allows for a graphic quality, while the watercolour provides a light, airy atmosphere. The palette is restrained, relying on earth tones for the ground and walls, punctuated by the blue of the sky and the occasional red of a figure's clothing. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's process as he navigated the urban environment of Paris, documenting the transition between the city centre and the surrounding countryside. It is a study of light, space, and the mundane activities of Parisians at the end of the nineteenth century.
