A cityscape by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in his signature Expressionist style, depicting a gasometer and train line with bold colours and simplified forms.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founder of the artists group Die Brücke (The Bridge), a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. Kirchner volunteered for military service in the First World War, but suffered a breakdown and was discharged. In 1937, his work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazis, and over 600 of his works were removed from German museums. He committed suicide in 1938. This oil on canvas painting depicts a gasometer, a large container for storing gas, in a suburban railway setting. The scene is rendered in Kirchner's characteristic Expressionist style, with bold colours and simplified forms. A train curves along the tracks, passing by the gasometer on the right and a church and houses on the left. The sky is a pale wash, and the overall effect is one of dynamism and movement. The composition is somewhat distorted, with the buildings and gasometer appearing to lean and sway. This contributes to the painting's sense of unease and tension.
