Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his woodblock prints of birds and flowers, a category known as kacho-e. Active during the late Meiji and early Showa periods, Koson initially trained in traditional Japanese painting before transitioning to printmaking. His work found popularity both in Japan and abroad, appealing to Western tastes for Japonisme. He also worked under the names Shoson and Hoson. His prints are characterised by their delicate lines, subtle colours, and careful observation of nature. This print depicts a gallinule bird perched precariously above a water strider. The bird, rendered in dark plumage with white markings, is captured mid-motion, its feet just about to touch the water's surface. The water strider, a tiny insect, is visible in the lower right corner. Pink carnation-like flowers and slender blades of grass frame the composition, adding a touch of colour and softness to the scene. The background is a muted grey, allowing the subjects to stand out. The print exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
