A theatrical, nocturnal scene by Konstantin Somov, featuring figures in eighteenth-century costume within a mysterious garden setting.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, frequently returned to the aesthetic of the eighteenth century in his work. This piece captures a theatrical, nocturnal atmosphere, drawing upon the traditions of the commedia dell'arte. The composition features a central couple in period costume, with the male figure dressed in a harlequin-patterned jacket. They are positioned at a table, surrounded by the shadowy, ambiguous figures of a garden party.
The scene is defined by its artifice and sense of performance. Somov employs a dark, moody palette to contrast with the illuminated pavilion in the background, where other figures gather. A masked individual stands to the left, observing the pair, which adds a layer of voyeurism and mystery to the interaction. The artist's technique here relies on precise, controlled brushwork, typical of his interest in historical pastiche and the stylised elegance of the Rococo era.
Somov's work often explored themes of loneliness, irony, and the mask, reflecting a detachment from the contemporary world. By choosing to depict these historical archetypes, he creates a dreamlike space that feels removed from reality. The attention to costume, the play of light against the dark foliage, and the deliberate staging of the figures demonstrate his mastery of narrative composition. This print offers a glimpse into the refined, melancholic world that Somov constructed throughout his career, where the boundaries between theatre and life remain blurred.
