A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers resting at a roadside tea stall in Fukuroi, from his celebrated Tokaido series.
This woodblock print is part of the Hoeido edition of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, a series that established Utagawa Hiroshige as a master of the genre. The composition depicts a quiet moment at a roadside tea stall in Fukuroi, the twenty-eighth station on the route between Edo and Kyoto.
In the foreground, travellers rest beneath the boughs of a large tree. A kettle hangs over an open fire, with steam rising into the air, while figures attend to their needs. The scene captures the daily rhythm of the Tokaido road, where such stalls provided necessary respite for those making the long journey on foot. To the right, a signpost stands near a path that leads into the distance, where the flat, open fields of the region stretch toward a soft, pale horizon.
Hiroshige employs a balanced use of space, contrasting the detailed activity of the tea stall with the expansive, quiet fields. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft gradients in the sky and muted earth tones to convey the atmosphere of a calm day. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to observe the human element within the natural environment. By focusing on the mundane aspects of travel, Hiroshige provides a view into the social fabric of Edo-period Japan. The series remains a significant record of the geography and culture of the time, produced during a period when travel along the Tokaido was a popular subject for woodblock artists. This print reflects the technical precision of the Hoeido publishers, who collaborated with Hiroshige to produce high-quality impressions that circulated widely among the public.
