A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting a group of women in elegant kimono within a garden setting.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a scene from the series Fuji no Uraha, or The Reverse Side of Wisteria. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre during the late eighteenth century. His work is known for its refined aesthetic, often featuring tall, slender figures with elegant postures that differ from the more robust proportions favoured by his contemporaries.
The composition presents a group of women in a garden setting, likely associated with a narrative or theatrical theme. The figures wear elaborate kimono with varied patterns, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile design and fashion of the Edo period. The use of a muted, earthy background provides a contrast to the carefully rendered garments of the subjects. The architectural elements, including the carriage and the wooden veranda, frame the figures and establish a sense of spatial depth within the two-panel format.
Eishi was particularly noted for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. His style often incorporates a sense of grace and composure, moving away from the more exaggerated expressions found in earlier ukiyo-e prints. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting his training in the Kano school of painting. This print captures the quiet interaction between the women, suggesting a narrative moment without relying on overt action. The balanced arrangement of the figures across the two sheets demonstrates the technical skill required for multi-panel woodblock production during this period. The work remains a representative example of the sophisticated output produced by Eishi during his most active years in the print medium.
