Unlike the more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which focuses on the topography and weather of the route, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tokaido stations often incorporates domestic or genre elements. The composition centres on three women within a traditional Japanese interior, framed by sliding shoji screens that open onto a veranda.

The architectural lines of the building provide a structured grid, contrasting with the fluid, organic forms of the figures. One woman sits on the veranda holding a small dog, while the other two figures are positioned inside, engaged in a quiet interaction. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones of green, red, and ochre, which are characteristic of early nineteenth-century printing techniques.
