A detailed 1644 Dutch engraving featuring elaborate Baroque cartouches, allegorical figures, and a central globe, originally produced as a book frontispiece.
This engraving serves as the frontispiece for the 1644 publication 'De Papierwereld', printed in Amsterdam. It displays the characteristic visual density of seventeenth-century Dutch book design. The composition is structured around a large, central, empty globe, which acts as a frame for the title text. Surrounding this central void are various allegorical figures and vignettes that reflect the intellectual climate of the period.
At the top, two figures are depicted in a small medallion, while the upper corners feature scholars engaged in study and observation. The central globe is flanked by two bearded men, likely representing classical philosophers or geographers, who gesture towards the empty space. The lower portion of the print is heavily decorated with swags of fruit, musical instruments, and a small putto holding a bow. The entire arrangement is bound together by elaborate, scrolling cartouches and winged figures, typical of the auricular style popular in the Netherlands during this era.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of Dutch copperplate engraving. The artist employs a range of line weights to create depth and texture, particularly in the shading of the drapery and the organic forms of the decorative elements. The work functions as a visual gateway to the text, inviting the reader to consider the breadth of knowledge contained within the volume. The inclusion of the date and location at the bottom provides a clear historical anchor for the piece, situating it firmly within the print culture of mid-seventeenth-century Amsterdam.
