Description
Plate XLVIII from Maria Sibylla Merian's *Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium* (c. 1705) depicts insects and plants from Suriname. This hand-coloured engraving showcases Merian's skill as both a naturalist and an artist.
This hand-coloured engraving is from Maria Sibylla Merian's *Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium*, published in 1705. Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Swiss naturalist, scientific illustrator, and entomologist. She was one of the first naturalists to observe insects directly. Her detailed observations and documentation of insect metamorphosis made a significant contribution to entomology. Plate XLVIII depicts various insects and their life cycles, set against a backdrop of Surinamese flora. A large beetle dominates the upper portion of the image, its wings spread. Below, a caterpillar rests on a leaf, while another insect, possibly a weevil, is perched on a fruit. A bee hovers near the bottom. The composition is both scientific and artistic, combining accuracy with an eye for aesthetic detail. The colours are delicate, with greens, browns, and yellows predominating. The fine lines of the engraving capture the textures of the insects and plants.
