A botanical illustration by Maria Sibylla Merian from *Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium*, depicting a plant with caterpillars and moths. This work combines scientific accuracy with artistic detail.
This botanical illustration is from Maria Sibylla Merian's *Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium*, a significant work documenting the flora and fauna of Suriname. Merian, a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator, embarked on a journey to Suriname in 1699 to study and record the life cycles of insects. Her detailed observations and artistic skill produced a series of illustrations that were both scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing. The image features a plant stem with broad, textured leaves, small white flowers, and clusters of red and green berries. Two caterpillars are depicted, one near the top of the stem and another towards the bottom. Two moths, each with distinct wing patterns, are also present. The composition is carefully arranged to display the plant's structure and the various stages of insect development. Merian's work was notable for its combination of art and science, contributing to the understanding of entomology and botany during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
