A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a French couple as viewed by a Japanese artist during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period as Japan opened its ports to international trade. These prints functioned as visual reports for a Japanese public curious about the appearance, customs, and fashion of foreign visitors.
The composition depicts a French couple in a domestic setting. The man sits in a Western-style chair, wearing a dark jacket and trousers, while smoking a cigar. The woman stands beside him, dressed in a voluminous gown with a headpiece, holding a small birdcage. The artist employs the traditional woodblock technique to render these unfamiliar subjects, resulting in a stylistic blend where Western clothing is interpreted through the lens of Japanese graphic conventions. The figures are outlined with clear, controlled lines, and the colour palette remains relatively muted, typical of the period's printing methods.
Such works provide a record of the cultural exchange occurring in treaty ports like Yokohama. The inclusion of Japanese text, or cartouches, identifies the subjects for the viewer, framing the foreign couple as exotic curiosities. The print captures a specific moment in history when the isolationist policies of the Tokugawa shogunate were ending, and the influx of Westerners began to alter the visual culture of Japan. The depiction of the man's facial hair and the woman's elaborate attire reflects the Japanese artist's attempt to document foreign aesthetics with limited direct exposure to the subjects themselves. This print is a piece of historical documentation, offering insight into how nineteenth-century Japanese society perceived and categorised the arrival of European visitors.
