A fine portrait miniature by Robert Mussard depicting the young Princess Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia in a blue gown.
This portrait miniature depicts Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina (1751-1820), the Princess of Prussia, during her youth. Painted by the Swiss artist Robert Mussard, the work captures the subject in a manner typical of mid-eighteenth-century court portraiture. The Princess is shown wearing a bright blue gown adorned with lace ruffles, holding a garland of small flowers. Her expression is soft, and her gaze is directed towards the viewer, reflecting the conventions of aristocratic portraiture of the period.
The composition includes elements of the Rococo style, such as the inclusion of a crown resting on a table to the right, which denotes her royal status. The background features a draped curtain and a classical urn, providing a sense of interior space. Mussard, who was active in The Hague, was known for his skill in handling the delicate medium of watercolour on ivory. This technique allowed for the fine detail visible in the lace and the subtle transitions of colour in the subject's face and hair.
Miniatures of this size were often intended for private display or as tokens of affection between family members. The use of ivory as a base provided a luminous quality to the skin tones, a characteristic feature of high-quality miniatures from this era. The work remains a record of the Princess before her marriage to William V, Prince of Orange, which occurred in 1767. The preservation of such small-scale works offers a glimpse into the personal lives and fashions of European royalty during the late eighteenth century.
