A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting a French horseman and a lancer, showcasing the military attire of the period.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, a Flemish-born artist active in Antwerp and Cologne, depicts military figures from the sixteenth century. The work belongs to a broader tradition of costume books, which were popular during the Renaissance for documenting the diverse attire of soldiers, nobility, and commoners across Europe. De Bruyn was a skilled engraver, known for his precise line work and his ability to capture the specific textures of period clothing, armour, and weaponry.
The print features two distinct figures: a French horseman and a lancer. The composition is typical of the period, presenting the subjects in a clear, informative manner suitable for study or reference. The figures are rendered with attention to the silhouette and the functional details of their military gear. The Latin and Dutch inscriptions provide context, identifying the subjects and their roles. This specific impression shows significant signs of age, with substantial paper loss and discolouration, which provides a glimpse into the physical history of the object. Despite the fragmentary nature of the surviving sheet, the remaining sections demonstrate the technical proficiency of De Bruyn in the medium of copperplate engraving.
Abraham de Bruyn produced numerous series of prints during his career, often focusing on the fashions of the day. His work is valued by historians for the accuracy with which he recorded the visual culture of the late sixteenth century. This print offers an opportunity to observe the intersection of military history and graphic art, reflecting the meticulous approach of Northern Renaissance printmakers who sought to catalogue the world around them through the medium of the printed image.
