A formal portrait of François Leidecker by Dutch Golden Age painter Zacharias Blijhooft, featuring the sitter in an ornate cloak against a garden backdrop.
This portrait by Zacharias Blijhooft depicts François Leidecker, a prominent figure who served as a deputy to the Rekenkamer (Chamber of Accounts) of Zeeland. Painted during the latter half of the seventeenth century, the work captures the sitter in a pose that balances formal authority with the relaxed elegance typical of the period. Leidecker is shown wearing a heavy, ornate cloak featuring gold-thread embroidery, which contrasts with the simple white linen of his shirt and the deep blue sash draped across his chest. His long, flowing hair is styled in the fashion of the era, framing a face rendered with careful attention to individual features and light.
Behind the sitter, the composition opens to a structured garden scene. The inclusion of manicured trees and architectural elements provides a sense of depth and context, suggesting the status and refined environment of the subject. Blijhooft, a painter active in Middelburg, demonstrates a command of texture, particularly in the way he handles the metallic sheen of the cloak and the soft, diffused light falling upon the sitter. The coat of arms visible in the upper left corner serves as a clear indicator of the sitter's lineage and social standing. The painting is a characteristic example of Dutch portraiture from the late seventeenth century, where the focus remains on the representation of the individual within a carefully constructed setting. The muted tones of the background allow the warmth of the gold and the coolness of the blue sash to draw the eye, creating a balanced visual experience. This print captures the fine details of the original oil painting, preserving the brushwork and the subtle gradations of light that define the work.
