This print reproduces a fragmentary leaf from an Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra, a foundational text of Mahayana Buddhism. Originating from the Pala period in Eastern India, such manuscripts were often produced in monastic centres for ritual use. The central miniature depicts a deity, likely a form of Tara or a similar female bodhisattva, seated in a meditative posture upon a lotus throne. The figure is framed by a square border, set against a deep blue background, and surrounded by a rainbow-hued aureole. The surrounding text is written in the Ranjana script, a calligraphic style common in medieval Buddhist manuscripts.
The physical condition of the original leaf shows the effects of time, with irregular edges and surface wear characteristic of ancient palm-leaf manuscripts. The artist employed a precise, controlled brush technique to define the deity, using mineral pigments that have retained their clarity over centuries. The composition follows a strict iconographic programme, where the central image serves as a visual aid for meditation and devotion. The surrounding text provides the doctrinal context for the image, creating a unified page where word and icon function together.
